Nearly one-fifth of solar panel inquiries to renewable energy companies in the UK are thought to come from people living in the South West.
Environmental experts agree the South West - and Cornwall in particular - is well-positioned to harness the benefits of solar energy though photo-voltaic panels (Solar PV) thanks to its southerly location.
The Government's Feed-In Tariff scheme, which offers money back for clean electricity provided to the National Grid, has boosted the appeal of small-scale and community-owned solar projects in recent months.
The profile of solar energy has also been raised after Cornwall Council announced multi-million pound plans to build the UK's first solar park, on land near Newquay, Cornwall Airport.
In Plymouth, plans have been put forward for a £15 million solar farm on part of the Langage Energy Park. Small-scale projects are also being submitted to planning authorities, as experts say a homeowner in the South West investing £15,000 in a solar photo-voltaic system could see a return of more than £45,000 within 25 years. For every 20 customer inquiries, one is expected to result in some sort of solar installation.
The overall number of inquiries is expected to increase this year as news of solar projects spreads.
