A solar farm in Hampshire could power more than 1,000 homes a year.
Plans have been drawn up to turn a 20-acre site on the Herriard Estate, south of Basingstoke, into a solar panel installation. The plans would see solar photovoltaic panels, which are 3.5metres tall at their highest point, in multiple rows roughly 10metres apart to harness the sun's rays and convert them into energy.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will decide on the scheme in the coming months. The land would be leased by the Herriard Estate and income generated through the government?s Feed-in Tariff scheme could be expected to support the estate for the next 25 years.
A consultation document presented to residents said the Herriard land was ideal for this type of venture due to its flat, open surroundings and low-visual impact.
If the solar farm ever ceased to be used, all the equipment would be removed and the land returned to its current state.
