Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems still work during overcast weather, research has shown. Overcast days allow sufficient light to travel through cloud cover to enable solar PV panels to operate. The news will come as a boost for householders thinking of installing solar PV systems in the UK, where 56% of days are classed as overcast. Experts say the siting of solar PV panels is important. They should not be placed in full or partial shade and work best when positioned close to a south-facing roof or other external location.
Solar PV panels have also been shown to function in the snow, albeit at a greatly reduced rate. During smaller flurries of snow, panels should continue to produce a small amount of electricity, which allows them to heat up slightly and melt any thin layer of snow. During periods of heavier snow, one solution is to brush fresh coatings from the panels.
For panels mounted in the grounds of a home, this should be a fairly straightforward process. Brushing panels installed on roofs should be undertaken with great care.
