The most powerful solar farm in UK proposed

A German owned energy firm has proposed a plan to build a 30 acre solar farm in Cambridgeshire. The £13 million project would provide enough power for more than 1,000 homes and save over 55,000 tonnes of carbon waste over 25 years. This scheme would fit in well with the Government commitment of having 20 per cent of energy coming from renewables by the year 2020.

There are currently a number of solar energy farms going through planning in the UK, but the proposal that has been put forward by Vogt Solar would dwarf these schemes

The proposals detail that the farm would output 5 megawatts of electricity per year - this is over three time bigger than its nearest approved rival

The benefits in terms of job creation have also been highlighted by Anton Milner, director of Vogt Solar, who has said: "These energy farms are needed. We are doing something very bad to our planet and it's time to fix it. It will also create many jobs in the UK. I've spent the last 10 years working in the renewables industry in Germany, where solar energy provides 70,000 jobs. We need to do the same in the UK."

According to Sue Sutcliffe, Vogt Solar's business development manager, the initial investment will "be between £12-13 million". She goes on to stress that this sort of investment would not have been possible if it were not for the feed-in tariff provided by the UK government
